Sunderland is set to come alive this summer as the city launches its Summer of Sport 2025 – a city-wide celebration of international and grassroots sport.

From July, residents and visitors can enjoy live screenings in Sunderland.

At the heart of the action, Expo Sunderland Pavilion will become one of the city’s key destinations, transforming Keel Square into a hub of sporting celebrations with free screenings of the year’s biggest fixtures exciting sports fixtures on its giant LED screen.

Focused on a celebration of sport, key tournaments include:

  • Wimbledon (30th June – 13th July 2025) – shown daily from 1.30-6.00pm
  • Women’s Euro’s England Group matches:
  • 5 July v France in Zurich (8pm kick-off)
  • 9 July v Netherlands in Zurich (5pm kick-off)
  • 13 July v Wales in St Gallen (8pm kick-off)

Women’s Rugby World Cup (23rd August – 27th September 2025).  Excluding the opening game on 22nd August, which is played right here in Sunderland.

Beyond the screen, Summer of Sport invites everyone to get involved through sports taster sessions. Whether it’s cheering on your national team, trying out a new sport or soaking up the sun in the city centre, the programme is free, inclusive and open to all.

The Expo Sunderland Pavilion has quickly become a striking hub for culture, creativity and innovation in the city, featuring one of the UK’s largest semi-transparent LED screens – a dramatic 20m by 5m backdrop for community events and experiences.

The versatile space has already played host to a programme of events that educate, inspire and connect people through sport, culture and technology. Previous events include May’s VE Day 80th anniversary and Make Music Day in June, when young creatives took over the Pavilion with live DJ sets, interactive workshops and city-wide soundscapes.

Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: “We’re delighted to bring live screenings to Expo Sunderland Pavilion as part of our Summer of Sport programme. It’s a fantastic opportunity for families to come together and celebrate world-class sport in the heart of the city.

“In advance of Culture House opening its doors, the Pavilion serves as the perfect venue to host our Summer of Sport. The event is expected to boost footfall across the city centre, support local businesses and create a real sense of pride in Sunderland.

“With something for every kind of sports fan, Summer of Sport is set to be a fantastic event.”

The screenings are delivered as part of Expo Sunderland’s ongoing programme of community events, which is proudly sponsored by the University of Sunderland.
