Nexus is the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive and administers funds on behalf of the Joint Transport Committee of the North East Combined Authority and the North of Tyne Combined Authority. Our task is to improve the quality of life and fortunes of everyone in Tyne and Wear, by creating better transport networks.
Our operations include the Tyne and Wear Metro, the UK’s busiest light rail system outside London. It carries around 37 million passengers a year, and is the backbone of our region’s public transport, with 60 stations with trains running up to every three minutes at peak times. We also manage bus stations at Park Lane Sunderland, Eldon Square and Haymarket Newcastle, Gateshead Interchange, Wallsend, Jarrow, Blaydon and South Shields, and run 300 bus services, by subsidy on behalf of the North East Combined Authority. Nexus also runs the only remaining passenger ferry on the Tyne, which carries about 400,000 passengers per year.
