People considering a switch to a career in care will be given a helping hand thanks to a Government-backed programme.

The University of Sunderland, partners and health care professionals are coming together to host a ‘Care & Health Career Drop In Event’ aimed at showcasing a range of exciting opportunities to pursue a career in care. Part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund-backed Skills & Inclusion Programme, the event is being led by the University of Sunderland working with programme consortium partner Training in Care.

Taking place between 1pm and 5pm on January 22, at the FabLab at Hope Street Xchange at Hind Street, people considering a career in care and health can drop in and learn more about the roles and progression opportunities available, as well as about training to support them to pursue a career in the industry.

Maggie Scott, a senior lecturer in Continual Professional Development at the University of Sunderland, said: “I am thrilled to be able to organise an event that I hope will inspire people about the rewarding careers available to people in care and health and the training on offer to help them get there.

“There are so many different roles available for people in this wonderful sector, and training to help those who want to break into care or to progress in the industry. I would urge people to come along and learn more.”

Dr Angela Brown, chief executive officer of Training in Care, a Skills for Care endorsed ‘Centre of Excellence’, providing bespoke training across England, said: “Care is such a fulfilling career pathway, and there are so many different roles available, in such a broad range of settings.

“For people looking to advance their career, in a sector that does such impactful and positive work, whether you’re out of work, in education, or employed but looking for a career move, this event is the perfect chance to learn more.”

The event is being delivered as part of the University of Sunderland-led Skills & Inclusion Programme, which has been backed by the UK Government via Sunderland’s UKSPF programme, managed by Sunderland City Council on behalf of the Sunderland Partnership.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK. Sunderland was allocated £14.9m of UKSPF to invest over three years. The local authority identified priority interventions for support to maximise outcomes for its residents, communities, and businesses, with funding to support communities and place, local business and people and skills.

Councillor Kevin Johnston, cabinet member for housing, business and regeneration at Sunderland City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see UKSPF support being used to get people into positive employment, boosting the skills of our residents and – in the process – benefitting the local economy.

“By shining a spotlight on career opportunities in this way, we are able to help more people progress into sustainable, high-quality roles, filling vacancies and helping our communities to thrive.”

The event is open to people already employed in a career in care and health, who can meet training providers and hear about career opportunities from entry level through to senior management positions, as well as to people looking to enter the industry.

This event will showcase care careers in hospitals, childcare, adult care, the community, care homes and private care.
