Sunderland College has been announced as a finalist for a prestigious national award for careers education and guidance.

The College was one of only two institutions nationally that were shortlisted for this year’s Careers and Enterprise Company Careers Education and Guidance Beacon Award from the Association of Colleges (AoC).

The award celebrates an outstanding example of careers education and guidance. The College needed to demonstrate highly effective engagement with schools, employers and other agencies, to provide students with excellent impartial careers education, advice and guidance.

Ellen Thinnesen, Principal and Chief Executive of Sunderland College, said, “I am extremely proud and honoured that we have been selected as a finalist for this national award and that our careers and guidance team has been recognised for their vital role in providing students with high quality support and information so they can make informed decisions about their future.”

Now in its 24th year, the AoC Beacon Awards showcase best practice and innovation in colleges. There were a total of eight award categories with 198 entries received from 123 colleges nationally.

The AoC is the national voice for further education, sixth form, tertiary and specialist colleges in England.

Vikkie Morton, Assistant Principal for Student and Customer Experience at Sunderland College, added, “The College has been piloting the Gatsby Good Career Benchmarks, a framework of guidelines that define the best careers provision in schools and colleges, and is an advocate for embedding them across the North East region and nationally.

“We are delighted with this accolade and excited about the College’s role in transforming the future of careers education and guidance.”

Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony on March 22 2019.
