A service to support regional employers and help those whose jobs have been affected as a result of coronavirus has been launched in Sunderland.

Sunderland Jobs Fuse, a joint service created by Sunderland City Council, the National Careers Service and the Department for Work and Pensions, will connect employers who have urgent vacancies with people in the city who are available to start work.

As part of the Sunderland Jobs Fuse package, the National Careers Service will provide support to those in the region who have lost their jobs or whose jobs have been affected by coronavirus.

People can contact the National Careers Service helpline for free, impartial, and expert careers advice as well as practical guidance such as CV writing and access to training.

Councillor Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “We know the challenges that Covid has presented to businesses and people across Sunderland, and we’re determined to do all we can to ensure that people are supported back into employment as quickly as possible and that companies are assisted to find the skills they need.”

Sunderland Jobs Fuse will provide a vital service for those affected by employment issues due to coronavirus.

The National Careers Service will also provide service to match people who have been made redundant to job vacancies where possible and provide additional support if people need help with employability or skills.

Leanne Misaljevich, Area Manager for the National Careers Service in the North East said: “We are facing uncertain times and in response to this we are delighted to be working with DWP and Sunderland City Council to form the Sunderland Jobs Fuse.

“The National Careers Service is uniquely positioned to be able to provide free, impartial careers and employment advice and guidance to residents and employers in the Sunderland area, all delivered by our team of professional careers advisers.”

Bernie Topham, Local Partnership Manager, Department for Work and Pensions added: “We are very pleased to see how Sunderland partners have worked together to support the work of our Jobcentre Plus colleagues who are incredibly busy, and working hard to ensure that everyone gets the support they need at this challenging time.”
